Difference between implants and lift
Most patients come in asking for breast implants.
But what they actually need… is often a lift.
Here’s the distinction that matters:
Implants add volume.
A mastopexy (breast lift) corrects position.
If the nipple has descended below the inframammary fold or there is significant skin laxity, placing an implant alone will increase size—but not restore a youthful shape. In fact, it can accentuate ptosis.
This is the most common mistake I see:
?? Adding volume to a structure that hasn’t been repositioned.
The result?
A larger breast… that still appears deflated or low.
In properly selected patients, combining augmentation with mastopexy restores:
• Upper pole fullness
• Nipple position
• Breast projection
• Overall balance
It’s not about “bigger.”
It’s about anatomic restoration and proportion.
Every surgical plan should be individualized based on:
– Skin envelope quality
– Parenchymal volume
– Degree of ptosis
– Patient goals
There is no one-size-fits-all operation in aesthetic breast surgery.
If you’re considering surgery, the key question isn’t:
“Do I need implants?”
It’s:
“What is the underlying problem I’m trying to correct?”
That answer determines everything.
